Abanindranath Tagore was born in Kolkata, 1871. He was a renowned Indian artist and declared a National Treasure artist by the Government of India. Also, he was a nephew of Rabindranath Tagore. He was a founder of Bengal school of Art. Tagore was invented and also father of wash painting technique. Tagore and E.B. Havell both are the principal of Calcutta school of art. Tagore majorly used two techniques wash and tempera Bharat Mata is one of the famous paintings. His painting was inspired by Ajanta murals or frescos paintings, Mughals, Kalighat pats Japanese and Persian. Eminent artists like Nanadlal Bose and Asit Kumar Haldar, they are one of the students of the Abanindranath Tagore. He was always inspired to entire generation that the definition of Indian modern art. He usually painted the figurative, animals and birds.
Tagore’s paintings show a unique artistic quality that was rare during his time. He kept a realistic foundation and combined it with influences from Mughal, Japanese, and Persian art. Both his writing and paintings are known for their style, with the main focus on how he tells a story in his writing and how he presents it in his art. He primarily used the wash technique, featuring flat colours with a suggestion of space, finished with fine lines.
Abanindranath Tagore passed away in Kolkata on 5 December, 1951.
