Mullick is considered one of the top painters of the Bengal School of Art. His paintings often focus on ordinary people, especially women, and the challenges they face. He likes to show a modern world where people have lost personal connections and become more distant in their behaviour. He used acrylics, pen and inks, pastels, but mostly works in oil on canvas, as he believes this medium allows him the most freedom to experiment and best depict modern life, which can be somewhat surrealistic. He usually uses colours like greens and blues to depict a largely urban India.
As a painter, he explores how traditions are fading and the connection between the past and present is blurring. He has created a unique style by mixing real and imaginary elements, using bold colours and lively imagination to make his work very engaging.
His solo shows have been showcased in Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Jakarta and the group shows in abroad included-France, New York, Japan, Singapore, Sweden and Germany.
Ashoke Mullick lives and works out of Kolkata.
