DEBASHIS KABASI

Artist

(Born-1965)

Debashis Kabasi was born in Kolkata, 1965. Although he is deaf and dumb. He holds the Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata and Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan.

Kabasi explore and focuses on human figures in his artworks, showing their search for a clear way of life. His art reflects people who have split personalities because they struggle to keep up with changing times. His paintings grab your attention with their gestures, hand, and face movements. Many of his characters have eyes that look in two different directions, highlighting their split personalities. They seem to look into two worlds at the same time. For him, hand gestures are important for communication, and he paints various hand movements that seem to speak on their own.

Kabasi uses similar colours to his twin brother Ashis Kabasi but his work is unique with vibrating outlines and dynamic gestures. He focuses on his generation's issues, like split personalities and keeping up with change. He explores textures and abstract art inspired by nature and continues to seek new painting techniques and surface treatments.

After he finishes painting his colourful works, Kabasi adds dark, shaky lines around the figures. It's like a child altering an adult's drawing. This mix of styles is a key part of his art. He starts with playful doodles and then refines them into clear shapes and outlines. The contrasting styles come together to make the art more balanced. The initial doodles often remain visible within the final piece, creating an abstract layer that overlays the figurative scene. He has exhibited his work in many solo and group shows in India and abroad.

Debashis Kabasi works and lives in Kolkata.
