JAMINI ROY

Artist

Jamini Roy was born in West Bengal, 1887. He was an Indian painter and declared a National Treasure artist by the Government of India, he known for traditional Indian and Western art styles to create unique master pieces. Roy completed his studies under the Abanindranath Tagaore from Government College of art, Kolkata. He was adopted simple figurative human forms and style along with soft brush strokes and flat colours. He usually used the tempera and gouache with primary colours and black bold lines. Mostly he was painted Kalighat painting which are represents the culture of Bengal. He painted a wide range of subjects or themes, - common people, decorative pattern, animals, Santhal folks- they are tribal community of indigenous to India, mythological stories, Christian iconography as well as home sewn Bengal quilts and Byzantine icons. In the earlier, he painted landscapes and portraits. Also, he was inspired by post-impressionism genre.  

Roy’s art is closely linked with Bengal modernism, filled with references to local crafts and village arts, and occupies an important place in the broader national art scene. By creating a new 'folk' style inspired by local art forms, his work stands out during this period as a unique example of Indian Primitivism and represents a new leftist cultural perspective.

Roy achieved Padma Bhushan award. Each artwork tells a story, capturing the spirit of its subject with remarkable clarity.

Jamini Roy passed away in Kolkata on 24 April, 1972.
