Sanjay Mazumdar was born in West Bengal and he is an artist and art practitioner. He always tries to keep learning. He admires 20th-century Impressionists and is influenced by the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci, J. M. W. Turner, Edouard Manet, and Salvador Dali. He is part of a group of local contemporary artists who work in various mediums like painting, sketches, photography, sculpture, installations, and experimental art. Their works inspire him, give him new ideas, and keep him motivated.
His main activity is teaching children to draw and paint. He believes that children see the world very differently from adults. A child's view is more like a dream, full of magic, while adults see things more practically. This is his main source of inspiration and the subject of many of his artworks.
Over the last fifteen years, his works have included a range of styles, from small charcoal pieces to occasional etchings, with periods of watercolour and a long phase of oil paintings. Most of his recent artworks use natural colours made from different soil textures, rocks, and sometimes leaves, fruits, or seeds. He prepares these colours himself using a marble mortar and pestle, dries them, and mixes the semi-ground pigments with glue to create a natural, grainy hue that lasts.
Sanjay Mazumdar lives and works in West Bengal.
