Shipra Bhattacharya was born in Kolkata, 1954.she holds a bachelor’s degree from Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Kolkata, and College of Visual Arts in Calcutta University, under the guidance of eminent artist Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya, later, she married with him. Additionally, she graduated in science from Calcutta University, before studying arts. She had exhibited both individually and in group exhibitions Nationally and Internationally.
Bhattacharya's early work employed Indian techniques like charcoals and temperas, focusing on themes related to women in public life, especially capturing the colours and scenes of Bengali markets, she addresses women's issues with a bold yet subtle approach. While the female figure is central to her work, she focuses more on the inner consciousness of these women. Her art features bold yet soft colours and smooth brushwork to convey these themes. Her later works mainly uses of oil on canvas, drawings inspiration from historical and mythical themes. She is influenced by Indian miniature painting traditions and reflects contemporary middle-class women's experiences in her art. Her artwork has a sensual quality, moving away from traditional portraiture, yet each woman she depicts possesses a charmingly authentic character. She effortlessly combines bright, vivid colours and smooth, flowing brushstrokes, making each painting captivating in its intriguing contrasts. In her recent works, the female body becomes a site or vehicle, backing the viewer, but tattooed with icons and images that voice both fulfillment and desire. In addition, she incorporates the decorative and geometrical patterns, flora and fauna, animals, birds, fishes, Bengali text or words and the other elements that support her paintings.
