Artist

(Born-1973)

Sukanta Das is an Indian contemporary artist and was born and raised in West Bengal, 1973. He holds the Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkata, 1996.

Das’s work combines every day and exotic themes and is usually figurative. His pieces have a dream-like quality, likely because of the colours he uses. His acrylic paintings capture moments in time and have a photo-realistic look. He portrays women in a very stylized forms, with large droopy eyes, long noses, and sharp features. Das often places these women in beautiful garden settings, adding to the surreal feeling of his work. His colour palette bright and sober.

Das says, "I am mainly inspired by the human body and nature. I love to use subtle colors to show their interdependence and close relationships. My paintings are a tribute to the stories of celestial love and the delicate coexistence of nature and humans. The mythological themes in my work create a new world of symbolic fantasy that celebrates deep love."

Das uses acrylics and mixed media on canvas to adeptly convey emotions through his art. His figures are striking, prompting viewers to envision narratives about the women depicted. Notice the intricate detail in their clothing and the artwork adorning them. Inspired by Mughal miniatures, his crafts captivating portraits that resonate with distant histories or tales.

Calligraphy often adorns the background, giving the impression of inverted miniatures. Rather than emphasizing a specific message, Das invites viewers to interpret his work freely. His meticulous attention to detail is evident, beautifully capturing features such as eyes, smiles, and even eyelashes on canvas. This approach resonates universally, appealing to both men and women for its sensual depiction of figures, precise execution, and overall simplicity.

Das participation in numerous solo and group exhibitions highlights his talent, earning him several awards, including an Honorable mention from the Avantika Art Society in 2003.
