Sutapa Khan was born and bought up in Kolkata. She holds Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from Visva Bharati Santiniketan, Kolkata,1994. As she grew up, she stayed unaffected by the busy city life. Despite the crowded population, she developed a deep connection to people, a love for nature, and its animals. Her paintings mainly focus on human figures, especially women. She pays close attention to capturing detailed expressions in her artwork and uses colours creatively to convey various emotions. Khan paints in a style that is both distinct and unique, developed over years of practice. Her brushstrokes and handling of colour show clear influence from the Bengal school of art. She is married to renowned artist Bratin Khan.
Khan has participated in a number of solos and groups shows Delhi’s art galleries and art camps in different places. She held her Solo shows in 2001 and 2003. Her paintings are in in the collection of Jayshree Mahta, Birla Academy, Jaqueline R Landquist, Sarla Devi Birla and many others private collection in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, USA.
She usually depicted in her paintings, humans especially women, Indian mythology (God and Goddesses), flora and fauna (Lotus ponds), landscapes, various birds and some decorative patterns. Her style is an extended form of Indian miniatures paintings on a large canvas or paper. She mostly works in tempera, also use pastels in her paintings. Her colour palette is bright and subtle and sober.
