SWAPAN DENRA

Artist

(Born-1966)

Swapan Denra was born in Kolkata, 1966 and he is an Indian contemporary artist, known for his collage works. He holds a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. He is a National scholar by Government of India. Denra exhibited many art exhibitions across India and abroad and achieved various awards.

Denra's artworks are compelling on their own. His 'Cityscape' series portrays congested cities with buildings tightly packed together. The 'Nostalgia' series recreates the old houses of Calcutta. In some pieces, he depicts the façade of houses in narrow lanes, while in others, courtyards or corridors with distinctive arches tell their own unique stories. He has also created portraits using collage techniques. Most of his works are in collage, incorporating mediums such as acrylics, fiberglass, various fabrics, leather, and paper for his portraits and cityscapes.

His different types of paper cutting with captivating colours and designs help him bring his thoughts to life. He chooses fine designs and uses logic to support his actions. The papers, with their beautiful designs and colours, reflect his naturalistic style. Sometimes a paper design sparks his creativity, and he collects designs and coloured papers to shape his ideas. Other times, the idea comes first, followed by the collection. His strong choice of subjects and the intense use of papers are very appealing. His compositions have gained dignity through their subtle, thought-provoking sensitivity.

Swapan Denra lives and works in Delhi.
