(Born 1943)
Tapan Ghosh was born in Kolkata, 1943. And he was graduated from Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. He studied modern printmaking (Graphics) at Atelier 17 in Paris, under the guidance of English painter Stanley William Hayter and Indian artist Krishna Reddy. Atelier 17 was renowned for its innovative approaches to printmaking, and Ghosh's time there influenced his artistic practice significantly. Additionally, he studied Art-monumental (fresco) at the Cole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris ( National School of Fine Arts in Paris.), under the esteemed Professor Bertholle. This experience expanded Ghosh's range to include fresco techniques, enriching his understanding of monumental art forms. These formative experiences in Paris played a crucial role in shaping his career as an artist. Ghosh’s artworks exhibited in many art exhibitions and also featured in prestigious auctions and charitable organizations dedicated to promoting art and raising awareness about it. He received several National and International awards.
His early works often depicted scenes from rural Bengal, capturing the essence of daily life with a blend of realism and a touch of abstraction. His work often reflects a deep connection to Indian culture and heritage, blending traditional themes with contemporary techniques and the style has also evolved over the years from an abstract expression to a figurative one. Many of his drawings, especially those of people's faces, have a strong sense of Romanticism. The faces seem to appear suddenly, as if drawn with quick, flowing strokes. Ghosh’s mastery of different mediums allowed him to experiment with textures, colors, and techniques, enriching his artistic palette. He worked in various mediums, including oil paints, watercolors, acrylics, and printmaking techniques such as etching and lithography, and also, various works in pencil with confidence on pencil works.
Ghosh's works play with formal elements, with lines and colors interacting in surprising and unexpected ways. Instead of just depicting the real world, he enjoys creating new forms through playful experimentation. He explores how layers come together and uses his instincts to guide the process, often letting the elements of the artwork shape themselves.
Tapan Ghosh is lives and works in Kolkata.
